Although Galileo worked for 15 years perfecting the microscope, he cannot be credited with the development of its modern version. The modern microscope was probably developed from the one constructed in 1590 by Zacharias Janssen. But no one thought then that the microscope could serve any useful purpose.
It was Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, a Dutch microbiologist who showed to the world of science how important a microscope was. He devoted his free time to optics, the science of sight. He became so skilled in his work that his magnifying glass could magnify objects 20 times their real size. In a single drop of water he could see hundreds of tiny creatures of all sizes and shapes swimming about and bumping into one another. The smallest creatures that he could see were later named bacteria.
